Rocketeer Close Up: Cristobal Maulen on Enjoying the Ride

Cristobal brings skill and passion to the Santiago Apps Support team and to riding the trails in the Cordillera de los Andes.

Can a job be as thrilling as riding a bike down a mountain?

For Cristobal Maulen, an avid mountain biker and Apps Support Engineer, the answer is yes.

With his “Dream Team” (as he fondly refers to the Apps Support team in Santiago, Chile) Cristobal provides top-notch support to customers around the world. “We learn every day, every moment,” says Cristobal. “It’s about staying curious.”

He applies those same skills to enduro (off-road) and downhill biking in the Cordillera de los Andes (Andes mountains). One of the world’s longest ranges, the snow-capped peaks run along South America's western side, forming Chile’s long spine. For Cristobal, who grew up in Santiago, biking is freedom. “When I'm on my bike, I'm free,” he notes. “At the same time, I'm right here. Every moment counts.”

Enjoying the view from Fundo Las Varas in Santiago.
"This is the bike park at Nevado de Chillán with magical views of the Chillán volcano. Going downhill through the woods is the best feeling ever!”

The payoffs are just as exciting at work with his team, says Cristobal. “It’s not just the day-to-day collaboration that’s great. It’s the chance to express yourself, be listened to and be a member of a big family,” he says.

Now in his third year at ServiceRocket, we caught up with Cristobal between his scenic outdoor adventures.

What attracted you to working at ServiceRocket?

CM: I really wanted to work in a multicultural environment. ServiceRocket gives me that and so much more. I have friends here. I work and talk with people around the globe every day. I’ve met so many good people; some of them have become my mentors.

How does your team in Santiago work together?

We live ServiceRocket’s core values every day: Think Team, Share the Knowledge and Delight the Customer. We know that if only one of us rows, the boat starts going around in circles. We're synced and moving forward.

What do you most enjoy about the work you do?

CM: I love everything about the work. I enjoy talking to our customers for the first time in a demo, when their journey with us begins. It’s like making a new friend. I enjoy collaborating with my team and the impact we make with our customers and potential customers as a support team.

How does the Apps Support team collaborate with Product and Engineering?

CM: We’re in constant communication. I've seen how the customer's voice is listened to by our Product team and how their feedback is taken into account by our Engineering team when we improve our apps. We’re always willing to collaborate with the customer. It’s a very productive and fruitful chain.

Having grown up in Santiago, what do you enjoy most about living there?

CM: Being able to be in the Cordillera de los Andes within one hour of Santiago to practice snowboarding in winter is awesome. Having a beautiful beach within one hour of Santiago in the summer is the simply best!

Where do you like to ride?

CM: There are a couple of bike parks in the Cordillera de los Andes in the hills and mountains near Santiago: La Parva and Valle Nevado. Those are two of my favorites.

"To me, biking is a win-win: you do the sport, exercise, spend time with friends and visit wonderful places."

Does your son share your love of outdoor adventure?

CM: León practices enduro with me. He has his own mountain bike and all the gear. He loves to go camping and everything that has to do with outdoor adventures.

“León is six years old now. We learn everything together. We are partners. He is my heart.”

Is there a relationship between mountain biking and customer support?

CM: Yes. Biking the mountain has taught me how important breathing is, how everything has a rhythm. You can always challenge yourself to learn new paths. New things appear on the trail; you learn to be flexible.

The same applies with customer support. Be in the moment. Be present. Listen to the customer. Rewarding relationships happen when you do that.

“Another view of Valle Nevado. La Cordillera de los Andes is very special. I always see an Andean Condor (Chile’s national bird) flying close to the bike park.”

I understand you’re studying to become a Senior Software Engineer at ServiceRocket.

CM: Yes, this is also part of my learning curve. I'm currently studying and enhancing my technical skills. Additional responsibilities have been assigned to me as well. I'm mentoring new people on our team and assisting them on a daily basis.

How cool is it to be able to plan your career and set goals towards your objectives?

"ServiceRocket and my manager support my career path. I'm grateful for that."

What would you say to encourage someone who is considering a job with the Apps Support team in Santiago?

CM: If you really want to feel that you're being listened to, that your collaboration makes an impact and that you can do it all while having fun, then ServiceRocket is your best bet. The Apps Support Team is the dream team—guaranteed!
